OVERCOMING HOMESICKNESS!

Homesickness is inevitable. No matter if you have moved across the world to study in the USA or if you have moved 2 hours away, everyone is bound to feel it at some point. Below we have listed our top 4 tips for overcoming homesickness so you can make the most of your incredible opportunity.

1) Embrace it

Feeling homesick is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone around you would have felt it at some point or another, and sometimes the best thing you can do is embrace it. Have a good cry if you need, but don’t let it linger! Allow yourself a certain amount of time, i.e. 24 hours to really embrace it, and then get back to your usual routine.

2) Take home comforts with you

Home comforts can almost be described as a necessity when moving abroad for University. Whether it is your favourite pillow, a childhood toy, a beloved blanket, or lots of photos - pack whatever object(s) that may cheer you up when you are feeling a little blue!

3) Explore your new home

Going out and exploring your new country or city is a great way to feel “busy” and distract your mind from the homesickness! There are so many new sites to see, new foods to taste and different adventures to try!

4) Focus on the reason you have moved overseas

This will allow you to have a sense of purpose and remind you of the goals you want to achieve while living overseas. Whether it be to pursue your sport professionally, excel academically, or gaining a free education, it will help overcome your homesickness.

Remember, life begins at the end of your comfort zone!
